Romantic Valentine’s Day Home Décor

Chic and romantic home decor that can be utilized in your home all year long

Valentine’s Day is upon us! I hope you all have special plans whether it be catching dinner and movie with your special someone or going out for drinks with friends. I felt like I should incorporate Valentine’s Day décor into a blog post, but when I was shopping around at Michael’s (always there, whoops) I was disappointed with all the cheesey Valentine’s Day décor…garland with paper red hearts, XOXO blocks, and cupid cut-outs. Sure, great party decorations, but nothing you want to keep up in your home for the entire month of February. Instead, I decided to round-up some adorable home accents that are cute and chic, yet appropriate for all year-long! Use the links below to shop:)

Chic and romantic home decor that can be utilized in your home all year long

Artificial Peonies

What is Valentine’s Day without flowers? Of course, fresh flowers are always pleasant, but sometimes they aren’t realistic (they die, duh). I’m a big proponent of artificial florals. Don’t let anyone tell you that they are tacky! These peonies come pre-arranged in a glass vase, so no work on your end. How adorable would they look on your desk?

Heart Ring Dishes

Trinket trays are my new favorite thing. They are the perfect landing spot for your everyday jewelry or other odds and ends.Heart Ring Dish with Gold Rim

Faux Fur Pillow and Stripe Accent Pillow

While writing this post I realized that I haven’t bought new pillow covers in months. I’m so deprived! Pillows are the easiest way to transform a space and you can never have too many! Make sure to check out my previous post about mixing and matching pillows to get more ideas!

Wishbone Accent Chair

This furry chair is so chic! Need I say more?

Blush Pinch Pleat Duvet Cover

Threshold bedding from Target is bae. Not only is it affordable, but the quality is on point. This bedding is on sale right now, so don’t miss out!

Ivory Ceramic Stacked Table Lamp

There is no such thing as too many lamps! Overhead lights can get harsh especially when you are trying to wind down for the evening. Lamps give the perfect ambiance.

Voluspa Candles (or this one)

You might remember from my home decorator gift guide, that Voluspa candles are my FAVE. They smell fantastic, but aren’t overwhelming. I love the packaging, too!

Kitchenaid Mixer Artisan Series

If you enjoying baking, even just a little, you need a Kitchenaid mixer. You just do. It will change your life, y’all! Expensive? Yes, but I found it for only $266 on Amazon (hallelujah) versus the standard $350 at most retailers. Functional, yet beautiful. Sigh.

Thank y’all for reading! I hope you have a fantastic Valentine’s Day. What are your plans??

How to Shop for Furniture Online

We live in a world where there are never enough hours in the day. Dedicating an entire Saturday to furniture shopping just isn’t reasonable. Thank the lawd for the World Wide Web! [praise hands] I talked about the beauty of buying home décor from Amazon in a previous post, but have you ever considered buying furniture online? These days, you can literally buy your new sofa during your lunch break and free up your Saturday for more important things (cocktails, anyone?). If you are looking to order furniture online, here are some tips to get you started!

  • Looks are deceiving. It is hard to tell the true size, color, and quality of furniture from a computer screen. There is always a risk involved with ordering online, so keep that in mind!
  • Know dimensions. You may love something, but if it doesn’t fit correctly in your space then you are wasting your time and money. I keep a list of room dimensions and ideal furniture sizes in my phone for reference!
  • Know materials. There is a big difference between solid wood and wood laminate. Deciding on your material will also help you set your budget. As far as couches and other upholstered items go, you may be able to request a swatch of the material to get an idea of the true color and texture.
  • Read reviews. Don’t trust every review you read, but do trust trends. If the majority of reviewers are saying the same things then it’s worth believing.
  • Shipping and handling charges. Furniture is heavy, so it’s no surprise that shipping can get pricey. I’m sure you’ve seen the Wayfair commercials that advertise their free shipping program. Be on the look out for free shipping promotions because it can save you a pretty penny!
  • Is pick up available? This may be your best option! Some stores allow you to order/reserve and pay online and then pick up at the store or warehouse within a certain time frame. This way, you avoid any shipping and handling fees.
  • Is assembly required? I don’t know about y’all, but there are just some things I don’t want to assemble. I got a new office chair the other day that was a cakewalk to put together, but a home entertainment center or a large shelving unit may not be worth the hassle, in my opinion. If you want to tackle it on your own, make sure you are equipped with the right tools, of course. (Today, I’m thankful for my power drill, amen)
  • Does my coupon apply? Woohoo 15% off Crate and Barrel! I’m going to use it on that headboard I’ve been waiting to buy. Hold your horses. Unfortunately, many coupons do not apply to furniture (sad day). Make sure you read the fine print, y’all.
  • Ask questions. Most websites have FAQs for specific products or give the option of submitting a question to a customer service representative. Get all your questions answered before you jump to purchase! Remember the surcharges, shipping fees, and hassle that will all be lost in the end if you aren’t satisfied.
  • Know your return policy. Ok, so you took a shot at ordering furniture online and you just don’t like it. Let’s make sure your item is returnable and if so, know how much time you have.

Knock, knock

Hey everyone! Thank you for stopping by Contemporary Charm. Blogging wasn’t something I planned on getting into, let alone blogging about interior design, but let me explain.

The past four years I’ve been consumed with pharmacy school. Literally. Eat, sleep, breathe, study, repeat. When people asked me what my hobbies were, I never knew what to say. Who has time for hobbies? I might say something like baking or traveling, but never decorating. You see, I lived in an apartment where I didn’t feel the need to “spruce up” because it never felt like my home. I also never felt “creative enough” to style a room and be proud of it (I’m a science geek, c’mon). Instead, I chose to put my spare time and cash into things like shopping and other weekend festivities (no comment). This all changed last May when I finally graduated pharmacy school and moved into a home with my boyfriend Kevin in Charlotte, NC. What was I supposed to do with all this spare time on my hands? I swear, overnight I became smitten by decorating my new house. Ideas of color palettes, pillows, light fixtures, you name it, are constantly flowing through my head. Now, I spend my weekends [window] shopping at HomeGoods and Crate and Barrel. When I discover an online home sale, I get more excited than Christmas morning. Home decorating has not only become my hobby, but something that genuinely makes me happy, and hey, I’m not half bad at it! So now, instead of stressing about studying for boards and finding a job, I’m busy channeling my new found creativity into crafting my perfect oasis. So the short side of the story is, why not start a blog?

After some deliberation and brainstorming, Contemporary Charm was born. The purpose of this blog is to share my personal experience designing and decorating my home as well as provide tips and inspiration that I find helpful for decorating any home. My style is a hybrid of contemporary, rustic, and farmhouse with a hint of charm, of course. More to come on this, but for now I’ll leave you with a sneak peak of my mini home tour! Thanks for reading!

Disclaimer: Y’all, I’m not a trained interior designer or photographer, nor did I study either in school. I’m just a nerdy pharmacist who happens to enjoy home decorating and wants to share it with you 🙂
